Description

Position Summary and Essential Functions: The Equipment Operator operates large equipment including excavators, tractor backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, and other machines as needed. Prepares, develops and maintains job sites which includes establishing elevations, installing earth retention systems, digging excavations and trenches, backfilling, grading soils and aggregate, and removing waste materials. Also performs and assists with other construction tasks involving concrete, pipe installations, mechanical installations, and carpentry work. Performs other trade work when necessary

Responsibilities:

  • Safely and proficiently operates all equipment.
  • Performs operator maintenance on equipment
  • Oversees rigging of cranes and ensures safe lifting procedures.
  • Functions as a competent person in trenching and excavating operations.
  • Installs grade nails and stakes.
  • Establishes correct grades and elevations, slopes, and offsets.
  • Installs batter boards.
  • Establishes and transfers benchmarks.
  • Recognizes/identifies various soil classifications.
  • Drains and dewaters trenches and excavations.
  • Maintains site drainage systems.
  • Controls construction site water table.
  • Installs sheet piling.
  • Ensures proper use of hand signals or other communication methods when required or necessary.
  • Correctly configures equipment for intended procedures and soil conditions.
  • Executes site lifting plans.
  • Loads equipment onto trailers for over the road transportation to other job sites or facilities.
  • Transports equipment to other job sites or facilities.
  • Performs carpenter, concrete finisher, pipe and mechanical, and construction craft laborer work when necessary.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must have 3+ years of working with/operating heavy equipment in commercial or heavy construction
  • Must have experience operating crane, backhoe, excavators or dozer
  • CDL or ability to obtain CDL.
  • HEO Journeyman card or comparable education/certification.
  • NCCCO crane certification or the ability to obtain certification.
  • 2-4 years of field/job site experience in a construction environment.
  • Knowledge of proper operation of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety standards related to heavy equipment and construction sites.
  • Blueprint/site layout reading skills.
